FLE 201: Oral Communication in English is a course at NC State University focused on improving English language-learners’ skills in:

  • active and interactive speaking
  • reading and listening comprehension
  • specific tasks in spoken English such as communicating information, making inquiries, and making requests and complaints
  • listening to lectures and effective note-taking

Course-work includes individual and group work in the form of activities such as oral reports, role play, and presentations. Non-NCSU students using this site as a resource are encouraged to complete the assignments and activities as much as possible.

In class, the course uses a variety of teaching and learning forms, including lectures, class discussions, presentations, role playing, collaborative activities, individual and group conferences, and audio/visual resources. We also focus on topics such as language acquisition, cultural issues in the U.S., and cultural knowledge of the countries represented by students in our class.

Objectives

After completing this course, students should be able to:

  • Speak with increased fluency in academic/professional and conversational English (e.g.: advanced vocabulary and grammatical structures; appropriate register and tone; and accurate pronunciation, intonation, and rhythm)
  • Engage successfully both in academic/professional tasks (e.g. lectures/note-taking, presentations, discussions, and group work), and in everyday conversations with native speakers about your academic field and a variety of U.S. cultural and global topics.
  • Apply effective listening strategies to academic and non-academic contexts (e.g. note-taking, asking questions, and requesting clarification).
  • Express your ideas and opinions precisely and articulately, in a variety of contexts, using overall accurate vocabulary, grammatical forms, and pronunciation.
