Discussion Roles

In addition to your own preparation for the discussion, each person will be assigned a different role for each discussion. Each person should submit their preparation as typed/handwritten notes to receive credit.

Discussion & Question Leaders (2-3 people)

As a leader, you will work with a partner or group to carefully read, watch, and/or listen to the discussion materials beforehand and prepare discussion points. During the discussion, you will work work together to ask questions, make sure each person has an opportunity to share his/her ideas, re-direct the discussion, etc.

Summarizers (2-3 people)

As a summarizer, you will work together prepare a summary of the key points and main ideas of the reading(s) and/or video(s). You should also select specific quotations, ideas, images, etc. that you found especially interesting or compelling and would like to discuss with the rest of the class. During the discussion, you should be prepared to contribute your insights.

Vocabulary Enrichers (2-3 people)

As a vocabulary enricher, you will work together to select 8-10 unfamiliar key words and/or phrases from the materials for discussion. Try to choose words/phrases that seem more common or are used multiple times, rather than very or rare technical terms. Use ludwig.guru to find the definition, pronunciation, and common usage of these words. Then, add the words to our class Quizlet set (give the definition, pronunciation, and an example). Be prepared to share them with the class before our discussion.

Researchers (2-3 people)

As a researcher, you will work individually or together to find background information related to the topic(s) for discussion. You might find information about the author/speaker, the history of the topic/issue, important images or objects that illustrate the topic, other relevant articles or studies, etc. During the discussion, you should be prepared to contribute your insights.
